about

The Lake Aloe Festival is an annual event held in the month of Zio (late July-early August). It is Anaphoria’s largest festival and a time of great rejoicing. Among the rituals performed is one in which the island leaders are seated in a mud pit amid a sprinkling of orchids while endless calls of ridicule are flung at them. A given leader’s reaction to this annual indignity is the Anaphorian’s most reliable barometer of a leader’s potential for greatness and humility. Leaders who have tried to suppress this ritual have been known to be killed. In recent years, similar festivals have started to appear throughout the island to welcome local leaders in the same spirit.
The Port of Barsa holds a unique place in its adaptation of the festival to include both stationary and roaming percussion ensembles that reflect the various cultures passing in and out of its port. This field recording captures the ten percussion ensembles, collectively known as “The Dekany”. Each ensemble retains its own tempo and meter while crisscrossing and converging in various locales around the city in celebration of the festival.
The piece is dedicated to Diego Villaseñor who assisted “The Dekany” with formulating their metric configurations.
Recorded by Kraig Grady for Radio Nabu Congul.
